Obituary of Joseph F. Freitas Jr

Joseph F. Freitas, Jr., age 72, of Middleborough, died on Monday, December 10, 2018, at the Morton Hospital in Taunton.

 

Born in Hendersonville, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Leola (Lively) & Joseph Freitas, Sr.  Joe was a graduate of Middleborough High School, Class of 1964.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam Era and was a member of the Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64 of the American Legion.

 

In 1980, Joe organized the "Friends of Town Hall".  He served as an active member of the community and served on many of Middleborough's Boards and committees.  Joe was a member on the Planning Board, the Business and Industrial Committee, Middleborough Zoning Board of Appeals, Middleborough Historical Commission and the Nemasket River Advisory Committee.  He also served on the town's Groundwater Recharge Area Protection By-Law Committee.  Joe became Middleborough's representative to the Betty's Neck/Assawompsett Pond Complex Committee.  Joe was instrumental in 1989 with having the Robbins Archaeological Museum move to Middleborough from Attleboro.  In 1994, Joe was a leader of Middleborough's 325th Anniversary Committee. He was also one of Middleborough's first G & E Commission members.

 

He was a Supervisor with the Plymouth County Conservation District for over 25 years.  Joe served on the board of the Pilgrim R C & D Council as a Director and was recognized for his contributions during the 2007 Meeting.  He was very much involved with the projects of acquiring Middleborough's Pratt Farm and Soule Farm.

Joe was truly devoted to the town of Middleborough and will be missed by many.

 

Joe was the beloved husband of Patricia (Salley) Freitas; devoted father of Jennifer Lee Carter & her husband Paul of Middleborough, Jonathan Freitas & his partner Michelle Tees of Middleborough and Jamie Yelton & her husband Nick of North Carolina; loving grandfather of Andrew, Adeline and Amelia Carter, Haley Washburn, Natalie and Jonathan Jr. Freitas, Leola, Lillian and Tristan Yelton; dear brother of the late David Freitas; and dear uncle of Scott Freitas, Todd Freitas, Cathleen Salley and Arnold Salley.

 

Visiting hours will be held at the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak Street, Middleborough, on Friday, December 14, 2018, from 4:00-8:00 PM.

 

Funeral services at the Ashley Funeral Home, Middleborough, on Saturday, December 15, 2018, at 10:00 AM.

 

Interment services will be private.
