Obituary of Mary T. Pittsley
Mary T. (Gravelin) Pittsley, age 88, of Middleborough, died on Tuesday, September 3, 2019, at the Tobey Hospital in Wareham.
Mary was the daughter of the late Peter D. & Thelma (Ray) Gravelin and wife of the late Walter R. Pittsley. Mary & her husband Walter owned Walt's Used Cars of Middleborough for many years. Mary worked various jobs; as a waitress at Eugene's Restaurant and Thelma's Restaurant, both located in Middleborough. She also worked as a cashier at the Millpond Package Store and Wareham Pharmacy into her 80's. Mary (in her 70's) was featured in the Wareham Courier newspaper, after running off a syringe-wielding thief at the Millpond Package Store and gathering information to see that the thief be caught. She is a two-time cancer survivor.
Mary was an avid bowler for many years. She enjoyed trips to Foxwoods and playing the lottery. She was a fan of the Boston Red Sox and of Tiger Woods. In her younger years, she enjoyed riding her horses. Mary loved her family, first and foremost. Her home was always welcome to visit or stay. She raised her children and some of her grandchildren. Her house was often the house the "Neighborhood Kids" for generations could be found visiting. Mary was the "rock" of her family!
She was the devoted and beloved mother of Eleanor (Maggie) Kirkland & her husband Mitch of Wareham, Betsy Cass & her husband Francis of Middleborough, Sharon Pittsley Sequeira & her partner Lysia Arruda of Middleborough and the late Walter (WaWa) Pittsley, Jr. and Douglas Pittsley. She was a second mother to her grandchildren, Walter (Chopper) Pittsley, III of Middleborough and Charlene (Beana) Quimby of Lakeville, whom she also raised. Loving grandmother of Francis Cass, Jr., Laurie Cass, Mable Kirkland, Mitchell Kirkland, Cecelia Rohrbach, Jennifer Kirkland, Randall Kirkland, Robert Pittsley, Adam Pittsley, Tara Pittsley, Olivia Fernandes, the late Crystal Pittsley; great-grandmother of 25 and great great-grandmother of 5; devoted sister of Carolyn Gravelin of Middleborough (who like to get lost in elevators with her at their many trips to Dana Farber) and the late T. Delia (Gravelin) McLucas Cote Burpee, Peter E. Gravelin, James Gravelin and Emerson Gravelin. She is also survived by many dear nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to all of the staff, nurses and doctors at the Tobey Hospital, 3rd Floor, for the care and kindness that was shown to Mary and her family at a most difficult time.
Family and friends are invited to the visiting hours at the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak Street, Middleborough, on Sunday, September 8, 2019, from 3:00-7:00 PM.
